Peapod was one of the pioneers in the in-home delivery service of groceries. Before meeting Polyfoam, Peapod was using standard hard-sided coolers to transport their refrigerated and frozen food to the customer. These coolers, however, did not lend themselves well to the distribution environment – they couldn’t stack or nest, the lids were breaking off, and they did not provide much thermal protection.
In January, 1998, Peapod partnered with Polyfoam to develop a solution. After analyzing Peapod’s distribution environment, Polyfoam’s team developed an EPS cooler/tote system that not only solved their existing problems, but eliminated the need for refrigerated vehicles and allowed for unattended deliveries. It gave Peapod a highly efficient, flexible and scalable solution that is still successfully in place today.
