Polyfoam Corporation recently hosted the File Hills Qu’appelle (FHQ) Tribal Council to assist them in planning for a housing development for the tribe. Located in the Saskatchewan province of Canada, the FHQ Tribal Council came to Polyfoam to get an education on the manufacturing and properties of Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) – the building method they are focusing on for the housing.
ICFs are EPS molded stay-in-place forms for the construction industry. The ICFs provide instant, high r-value insulation and structural strength to a home. Structures built with ICFs are proven to be more energy efficient, quieter and stand up to environmental elements such as strong winds better than stick-built structures. The FHQ Council’s goal is to provide high-quality, energy efficient housing for all of its tribe’s members, and the properties of ICFs make them a superior choice for surviving arduous winters and summers in the Saskatchewan province.

Upon undertaking this project, the Council decided they would not only look at constructing the housing with ICFs, but actually consider molding their own blocks for use in the development. To do so, they must first construct an EPS molding facility and learn the ins and outs of manufacturing molded EPS products, and specifically, molded ICF blocks. Their first step in the learning curve was to find an existing EPS molder that was willing to provide education and input, and they turned to Polyfoam.
Polyfoam has been manufacturing EPS foam for more than thirty years, and has experience molding ICF forms using the latest and most efficient techniques and technology. The company offered to lend the expertise of its team to the FHQ Council. Several members of the Council spent a day at Polyfoam touring the plant and receiving a general overview of the equipment and steps required to open their own facility.
